Stanford University Website

Stanford University Website April 30, 2013 Stanford University must be proud of one of its favorite sons, Jason Collins. But the university needs to showcase this story on its website (photo credit: jrissman). Yesterday was a watershed moment in professional sports, with the public coming out of NBA player and former star Stanford Cardinal Jason Collins. Collins marks the first active male player to come out as gay in one of the four pro big leagues the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. And what a wonderful human being to come out and be the Jackie Robinson of our time. After all, it could have been a player outed against his will. It could have been a player charged with domestic assault against his boyfriend. But instead its an erudite 34 year-old veteran, who graduated from Stanford University and wore the #98 on his jersey this past season in honor of The Trevor Project and Matthew Shepard, a young man tortured and killed in a notorious anti-gay hate crime. Stanford University is rightly proud of its native son. The Stanford Daily today has a cover story about the reaction around The Farm to Collins coming out. Said the Stanford Athletic Director, Bernard Muir, in The Stanford Daily, IÂ  am proud to hear that Jason, one of our Stanford sons, has taken a leadership role on this topic. On behalf of a diverse athletic community, I hope that we progress to the point in society where truthful moments like these are no longer newsworthy. And of course, outside of The Farm, notables like former President Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Martina Navratilova, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Dwayne Wade, Shaquille ONeal, and so many others have added their voices to the chorus of support. But why, we ask, is this not a story on the Stanford University website? Seriously? This is one of the biggest news stories in the media right now. Youd think that Stanford would want to pay tribute to one of its favorite sons on its homepage today (or yesterday). Or tomorrow. Right now, theres a story about prospective Stanford students, a story about a novelist being honored, images of a transparent brain, and a story about inspiring high school teachers to teach science in new ways. Stanford University, Jason Collins is the Jackie Robinson to the LGBT community. This is big news. Put him up on your homepage and be proud that he hails from your university. Get with the program. And, as an aside, Stanford is rated as one of the gay friendliest universities in the nation.

Subduction The Sinking of Tectonic Plates

Subduction, Latin for carried under, is a term used for a specific type of plate interaction. It happens when one lithospheric plate meets another—that is, in  convergent zones—and the denser plate sinks down into the mantle. How Subduction Happens Continents are made up of rocks that are too buoyant to be carried much farther than about 100 kilometers deep. So when a continent meets a continent, no subduction occurs (instead, the plates collide and thicken). True subduction happens only to oceanic lithosphere. When oceanic lithosphere meets continental lithosphere, the continent always stays on top while the oceanic plate subducts.  When two oceanic plates meet, the older plate subducts.   Oceanic lithosphere is formed hot and thin at mid-ocean ridges and grows thick as more rock hardens underneath it. As it moves away from the ridge, it cools. Rocks shrink as they cool, so the plate becomes more dense and sits lower than younger, hotter plates. Therefore, when two plates meet, the younger, higher plate has an edge and does not sink. Oceanic plates do not float on the asthenosphere like ice on water—they are more like sheets of paper on water, ready to sink as soon as one edge can start the process. They are gravitationally unstable. Once a plate begins to subduct, gravity takes over. A descending plate is usually referred to as a slab. Where very old seafloor is being subducted, the slab falls almost straight down, and where younger plates are being subducted, the slab descends at a shallow angle. Subduction, in the form of gravitational slab pull, is thought to be the largest force driving plate tectonics. At a certain depth, the high pressure turns the basalt in the slab to a denser rock, eclogite (that is, a feldspar-pyroxene mixture becomes garnet-pyroxene). This makes the slab even more eager to descend. Its a mistake to picture subduction as a sumo match, a battle of plates in which the top plate forces the lower one down. In many cases its more like jiu-jitsu: the lower plate is actively sinking as the bend along its front edge works backward (slab rollback), so that the upper plate is actually sucked over the lower plate. This explains why there are often zones of stretching, or crustal extension, in the upper plate at subduction zones. Ocean Trenches and Accretionary Wedges Where the subducting slab bends downward, a deep-sea trench forms. The deepest of these is the Mariana Trench, at over 36,000 feet below sea level. Trenches capture a lot of sediment from nearby land masses, much of which is carried down along with the slab. In about half the worlds trenches, some of that sediment is instead scraped off. It remains on top as a wedge of material, known as an accretionary wedge or prism,  like snow in front of a plow. Slowly, the trench is pushed offshore as the upper plate grows.  Ã¢â‚¬â€¹ Volcanoes, Earthquakes and the Pacific Ring of Fire Once subduction begins, the materials on top of the slab—sediments, water, and delicate minerals—are carried down with it. The water, thick with dissolved minerals, rises into the upper plate. There, this chemically active fluid enters an energetic cycle of volcanism and tectonic activity.  This process forms arc volcanism and is sometimes known as the subduction factory. The rest of the slab keeps descending and leaves the realm of plate tectonics.   Subduction also forms some of Earths  most powerful earthquakes. Slabs normally subduct at a rate of a few centimeters per year, but sometimes the crust may stick and cause strain. This stores potential energy, which releases itself as an earthquake whenever the weakest point along the fault ruptures. Subduction earthquakes can be very powerful, as the faults they occur along have a very large surface area to accumulate strain. The Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coast of northwest North America, for example, is over 600 miles long. A magnitude ~9 earthquake occurred along this zone in 1700 AD, and seismologists think the area may see another one soon.   Subduction-caused volcanism and earthquake activity occur frequently along the outer edges of the Pacific Ocean in an area known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. Morality And Guns Today I realize you cannot legislate morality. I agree with that 100 percent. Yes, saying things like Thou shall be moral is foolish, but other things can be done. We have to get back to our roots and become more civil and moral. Throughout recent history our society has continually loosened its moral bonds until we have arrived at the 'everything goes' attitudes of today. This loosening simply has to be reversed. Let me say that this will be a difficult task, but our society MUST put common sense and civility forefront of today's efforts nationwide. It will be harder to fight then any war. We must have an awakening or things will continue to go downhill. Would you agree on that? First of all, I do not have all the answers on this. We could start by looking at our past and seeing what worked when. I am not talking about slavery, segregation, etc etc. What I am talking about is how families worked and how people responded to each other, how neighbors responded to each other. We must explore the brotherhood that existed between friends. We must look back to look forward. I think common sense plays a big issue in this. In today's society there is this idea that we must be politically correct all the time. Remember (or hear) of a time when everything wasn't regulated, and was NOT tied up by the government's beaucracy, and forthere DID NOT destroy personal responsibility? All laws leave some people out. Without this over regulation, people were not excessively left out by 'red tape crafted divisions'. All of this ties into morality. I think people have become less responsible. Seeing the increased role of government in everyday life, too many parents have dedicate d the government to educate their child. Less time is spent with each other. Less of that famous 'bonding time', less family cohesiveness, less family traditions. What has filled the void from the absence of this ever-so-valuable time? Media has filled the gap. This includes everything from TV, movies, video games, music, etc etc. Afterall the media is led by people who grew up without knowing what is right or wrong, just like the people watching it. You now have a society in which few know what is right and wrong because this cycle continues on faster and faster. Believe it or not, I believe there was a time that had universal morals. These include lots of small things, but they are what consisted of the moral foundation we have lost. These small things include street manners, table manners, specific courtesys each directed toward men and women, clothing courtesys, trustworthiness (ever hear of the time when a handshake was worth more than a signature?), a respect of each others do ings and business, the Golden Rule, spoken courtesys...the list goes on and on. It is not the media's fault only, they are only the most visable layer. WE, and I repeat WE, the society, are the ones that tolerated or even let the media do something questionable to begin with. WE are the ones that watch and listen to their programs, WE are the ones who give them money, WE are the ones who failed to voice our concerns on something they were airing, etc etc. Now, in a society that has evolved to which 'everything goes', Hollywood doesn't think twice about showing negatively-influencing movies, or the record companies and singers (especially rap, rock, etc...) don't think twice about recording songs about things like getting your girlfriend pregnant and driving the car off the bridge while she's screaming in the trunk--things like that. What's even worse is that, like I said earlier, WE let it happen, we, as a society, do not have enough balls to say Enough is a Enough!!!!! Afterall, it would be politically incorrect (going back to what I said earlier) and might offend someone right How does all this tie into guns? WE, as a society, would rather blame something inhuman. Right now, we would rather blame something that merely indicates the state of ourselves. For decades we have been slipping down the path of neglecting our present and future moral foundation. We are

Play in as much detail as possible Essays Play in as much detail as possible Essay Play in as much detail as possible Essay People experience a huge range of emotions in their lifetime, in Romeo and Juliet; Shakespeare shows his audience a wide range of emotions through his characters, the following events and the action of the play.The audience sees characters playing several emotions and can understand how and why the characters are feeling these emotions.Indeed, by the end of Romeo and Juliet the audience would feel quite emotionally drained by what they had just seen on stage.Anger is portrayed as a very powerful emotion in this play; it is one of the reasons that the two families Montagues and the Capulets cant make the peace. I think that the two young groups are angrier than there parents in the first part of the play e.g. what! Dawn and talk of peace? I hate the word as I hate hell, all Montagues and thee this is said by Tybalt in act I scene1, a Capulet to one of the Montagues at the gas station where the Montagues plead peace. Tybalt is angry because he thinks that because his uncle is in a feu d with his rival he has to start a fight with the enemy to impress his uncle. This is a god example because it starts the story in anger, which makes Romeo and Juliets love in the middle of all the negative emotions seem lost and hopeless.You dont see much anger in the parents until the end of the play e.g. out you green sickness carrion! Out you baggage! You tallow face. This is said by lord Capulet in act 3 scenes 5 when he is in a rage with Juliet because she wont marry Paris because she is still in love with Romeo even though he killed her cousin and has been exiled. I think that her father may be angry with her because she still loves him and not only is he the enemy he killed his nephew. Her father actually hits her and starts shaking her quite roughly, he also strikes her mother when she tries to pull him off Juliet. Juliet is left to the comfort of the nurse who looks after her.Grief is not shown until Tybalt is killed e.g. my wife is dead tonight! Grief of my sons exile ha th stoppd her breath. What further woe conspires against my age? this is said to the prince in act 5 scene 3. I think that this could be that he is trying to appeal to the princes nature to let Romeo back into the city because it is causing others grief. This shows that he does care about his son because through out the play Romeo and his parent dont appear have much of a relationship.Also lady Capulet appeal to the prince for justice against Romeo, I beg for justice, which thou, prince must give. Romeo slew Tybalt: Romeo must not live. She doesnt seem to care that Tybalt killed Mercutio when Romeo was trying to convince Tybalt that he meant peace. She seems to have a more serious relationship with Tybalt than everyone thinks so maybe she grieved more than most because he meant more to her.Hatred is the strongest emotion in this play; it is clearly seen that the feud between the Capulet and the Montagues is truly hatred and that their children grew up with that so they know no diffe rent. Tybalt see Romeo at his party and sees everybody laughing at him because he would let it pass, instead he speaks to his uncle uncle, this is a Montague, our foe, a villain that is hither come in spite, to scorn at our solemnity this night I think that Tybalt enraged that they come to spite his family and the name he honours. Indeed his uncle does not want a scene at his party he has prepared, he tells Tybalt to leave it; he hits Tybalt to get though to him that he doesnt want a scene at his party. It could be that he has grown tired of this violent feud and has matured although he does seem a violent man though out the whole play.Mercutio hates the Capulets although he has no family ties with the Capulets or the Montagues. Something in the way he acts around Romeo makes me think the he values the friendship more than Romeo does. O calm dishonourable, vile submission Tybalt you rat catcher, will you walk? This is said it Tybalt from Mercutio in act1 scene2.This is when Tybalt f irst approaches Romeo at the beach with the intent of killing him of at least do him harm, instead he finds that Romeo is not there so he starts on Mercutio. Mercutio taunts him making him angrier and angrier. When Romeo turns up he pleads peace with Tybalt but he is all in a rage and you can clearly see that he truly hates Romeo and as he tries to harm him, Mercutio steps in the way therefore harming him. It is after this that Romeo hates Tybalt for what he has done and acts rashly and retaliates with dire consequences.Love is the main theme of this play for it is what the story is based on, the love that is forbidden. I think that it is cruel to deny their childrens love for the sake of a feud and the love seems lost in the middle of all the ill feelings of the rivals.It is not only the love between Romeo and Juliet but of friends and family.If thou bent on love honourable, they purpose marriage, send me word tomorrow where and what time thou wilt perform the rite. Juliet to Romeo says this in act 1 scene 2.I think that when she and Romeo have declared their love for each other, all thats left for them to do is marry, because they know that if anyone found out before they were wed they would never see each other again.Juliets mother, Lady Capulet says to Juliet about the marriage proposal from Paris the valiant Paris seeks you for his love. It seems that her parents cant see how wrongly suited for her Paris is, and how in love with Romeo she is later in the play.Her father tries to force her into marrying Paris, because he wants her to have a good life and he thinks that his choice of husbands is the right choice and nobody should question that.Juliet shows how true her love for Romeo is when she fakes her death in order to get out of her marriage to Paris.Although fear is present in this story it seems that both sides of this feud are fearless to some point. When the fight is in action it seems that both sides show no fear. I think that the only fear shown is when the friar fears that Romeo does not know the plan and thinks that his love is really dead. Also when Juliet fears that her family will deny her love e.g. bondage is hoarse, and may not speak aloud with repetition of my Romeos name this is said when Juliet fears that her family will harm Romeo for loving Juliet in act 2 scene 2.Indeed she is scared of what her father might do but at the same deeply in love with Romeo to worry too much about what she is doing.As I said the friar that gave Juliet the poison is fearful because he knows that Romeo does not know that it is poison and not death. He rushes to sends word in another letter but alas he is too late.Despair means complete lack of hope and I think that quite often Juliet feels that there is no hope for her and Romeo e.g.My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown and known too late! Prodigious birth of love to me, that I must love a loathed enemy. Juliet says this in act 1 scene 5. In some ways she is q uite right in this because his father is her fathers rival so in turn she must hate him to. But she loves him and this is why she despairs.O Romeo, Romeo where fore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or, if thou wilt not, be sworn my love, and Ill no longer be a Capulet. This is said Romeo by Juliet act 2 scene 2. This is sort of love and despair in the case that she is despairing because she loves Romeo but he is forbidden, and love because she loves him so much that she would refuse her name and take his which would mean abandon her own family.I think that passion differs very much from love in a way that it is almost lust e.g. o trespass sweetly urgd! Give me my sin again This is said by Romeo to Juliet in act 1 scene 5. This is when she kisses him and he is asking for more, but it is a sin because she is not wed to him and she is supposed to be pure for her husband.I think that it is not only love that tells the story but passion too.This was thought of Romeos first love, for he thinks that he is in love with rosaline who should be married to him, organised by her father, even though he has never met or seen her. Show me a mistress that is passing fair: what doth beauty serve but as a note thou canst not teach me to forgetThis is said to Benvolio, Romeos cousin by Romeo about rosaline in act 1 scene 1.Romeo is in love with the idea of love and is so rapped up in the spirit of his love that until he meets Juliet he mistakes excitement for love.Violence seems to me of more of an action rather than an emotion but it is a grate feeling in this play e.g. now by stock and honour of my kin, to strike him dead I hold it not a sinTybalt says this to all montages in act 1 scene5. I said that I thought violence more of an action than an emotion, but you can clearly see here that Tybalt is feeling violence and although he doesnt kill Mercutio until later in the play I think that he really does want to kill all montages for the sake of honour in this family feud. Also I think that Tybalt doesnt consider it a sin to kill all Montagues for he is in the right and they do not deserve the right to live in his eyes.In conclusion I feel that all the emotions contribute to this masterpiece although critics have said the story is a love and hate storyline all the other emotions bring it together.William Shakespeare has included the most intense and intimate emotions and used them to there full extent.

Dumping of Unsafe Products - Case Study Example After the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned the painkiller dipyrone because it can cause a fatal blood disorder, Winthrop Products continued to sell dipyrone in Mexico City (Shaw et al., 2009, p.34). ‘Made in the USA: Dumped in Brazil, Africa, Ira’ seems to be the business philosophy followed by many of the American product manufacturers. In other words, Americans believe that they have the right to enjoy the benefits of the products they discovered or invented. At the same time, they believe that the harmful effects of these products should be suffered by the rest of the world rather than the Americans. The Holy Bible says that those who take the sword will be killed by the sword. However, Americans have changed this proverb as it is the duty of other innocent people to accept death even though the Americans have done the mistakes. It is ethically wrong to dump potentially hazardous products in third world countries. The producers of the hazardous products sh ould take the responsibility of dumping such products properly in their own country instead of cheating the innocent people in other countries. This paper briefly discusses the ethics or morality of dumping unsafe products in overseas countries by America. One of the reasons cited by Americans to justify the activity of dumping unsafe products in overseas countries is related to humanitarian considerations. â€Å"They say their motives are humanitarian. Because the rate of dying in childbirth is high in Third World countries, almost any birth control device is preferable to none† (Shaw et al., 2009, p.34). The above argument is totally unacceptable. The logic of providing dangerous items for saving the life of some people is indigestible, at least for non-Americans.

Sniper Coward or Hero Since the invention of the firearm, skilled individuals with specialized equipment have influenced the ebb and flow of the battlefield. At times this influence has been so great as to turn the tide of history. The long-range sharpshooter or sniper has had a telling effect on the direction, drive, and scope of battle. The sniper has felled the command structure of his enemies, rendered their equipment useless, and driven fear into the heart of the men. Thus, the sniper is one of the most effective weapons on the field of battle. A true sniper is an operative who gathers intelligence for the command structure and occasionally takes the one, well-aimed shot that, if done properly, will save lives. In order to better understand exactly how snipers are valuable, one needs to consider their mission, training, and equipment. The sniper^s primary mission is to deliver long range, precision fire on key targets and targets of opportunity. His secondary mission is the collection and reporting of information. Both missions are very specific and dangerous. To carry out these missions, a sniper must be highly trained in marksmanship and field craft skills to ensure maximum effectiveness with minimum risk (Lanning 88-100). The U. S. Army Sniper School is five weeks of intense training. Before a student can even be considered for attendance to sniper school, he must meet stringent qualifications and pass a mental examination. Classes are usually small, but have a high failure rate. The first week consists of physical training and classroom instruction, concentrating on the construction of a Ghillie Suit, which is a special hand made form of camouflage (Sasser 215). The second, third, and fourth weeks are composed of practical exercises and tests covering everything taught during week one. Emphasis is placed on developing stalking skills. Stalking is the term used when a sniper maneuvers into his final firing position (Lanning 159). After the fourth week and all the field orientated tests have been completed, the students that are left, participate in a four day field training exercise which is run as a real life mission. The students form two-man teams. One is the sniper and the other is his spotter. The spotter^s main function is to observe a target and provide data to the shooter. The spotter must also be fully sniper qualified and trained to carry out the mission. The team receives an operation order, which explains its first mission or objective. The team must then plan its

Mediated Communication: Connected or Disconnected? Essay

Abstract: We all seem to live and breathe social media. Sending a message and staying connected is as easy as it can get. Technology is essentially transforming traditional methods and revolutionizing the way we communicate with one another. Today, we have to stay relevant, informed, and up-to-date on the newest communication channels and incorporate them into our range of daily activities. However to build meaningful connections between people, we need to let technology enhance our communication, rather than dictate it. As new communication technological advancements become available, our temptation is also to spend less time on face-to-face interactions at the risk of losing the critical context of our message. Of course, texts, e-mails and social media can dramatically impact the speed and volume of messages, but therein also lies the danger in allowing the subtle aspects of dialogue and personality to fall by the wayside Face-to-face discussions are the foundation of human communication; once established, it allows us to build trust, clearly articulate our ideas and minimize misunderstanding. However, for many of us, face-to-face communication seems to be a dying art – replaced by text messaging, e-mails, and social media. Human communication and interactions are getting shaped by available technologies. Thus we have to ask – in today’s tech-savvy world, are we really connected or essentially disconnected? Is social media sabotaging the art of personal communication? On a crisp Friday afternoon last October, Sharon Seline exchanged text messages with her daughter who was in college. They ‘chatted’ back and forth, mom asking how things were going and daughter answering with positive statements followed by emoticons showing smiles, b-i-gï Å  smiles and hearts(/). Happiness†¦. Later that night, her daughter attempted suicide. In the days that followed, it came to light that she’d been holed up in her hostel room, crying and showing signs of depression — a completely different reality from the one that she conveyed in texts, Facebook posts and tweets . (Courtesy; Forbes magazine, April2012) As human beings, our only real method of connection is through authentic communication. Studies show that only 7%  of communication is based on the written or verbal word. A whopping 93% is based on nonverbal body language. Indeed, it’s only when we can hear a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we’re able to know when â€Å"I’m fine† doesn’t mean they’re fine at all†¦or when â€Å"I’m just sad† means they’re thoroughly depressed. Flooded in technology, anyone can hide behind the text, the e-mail, the Facebook post or the tweet, projecting any image they want and creating an illusion of their choice. They can be whoever they want to be and without the ability to see or feel, their audiences are none the wiser. Every relevant metric shows that we are interacting at breakneck speed and frequency through social media. But are we really communicating? With 93% of our communication context stripped away, we are now attempting to forge relationships and make decisions based on phrases, abbreviations, snippets, emoticons which may or may not be accurate representations of the truth. This presents an unprecedented paradox. With all the powerful social technologies at our fingertips, we are more connected – and potentially more disconnected – than ever before. This is where social media gets dicey. Communication Barriers: New Dimensions Social technologies have broken the barriers of space and time, enabling us to interact 24/7 with more people all over the world. The focus is now on communication quantity rather than quality and Superficiality against authenticity? But like any revolutionary concept, it has initiated a new set of barriers and threats. It is an ironic situation where social media has the potential to make us less social; a surrogate for the real thing. For it to be a truly effective communication vehicle, communicators bear a responsibility to be genuine, accurate, and not allow it to replace human contact altogether. In the workplace, the use of electronic communication has overtaken face-to-face and voice-to-voice communication by a wide margin. This major shift has been driven by two major forces: the speed/geographic dispersion of business, and the lack of comfort with traditional interpersonal communication among a growing segment of our employee population: Gen Y and Millennials. Studies show that these generations – which will comprise more than 50% of the workforce by 2020 – would prefer to use instant messaging or other social media than stop by and talk with someone. This new communication preference is one of the  Ã¢â‚¬Å"generational gaps† plaguing organizations as employers try to manage a new set of expectations and norms in their younger employees. The majority of the world’s largest businesses are using social media with little thought as to how it can contribute to the organization’s overall strategy and that its use is destroying the integrity of face-to-face conversations and replacing it with â€Å"hidden conversations†. This is arguably true to some extent with many companies confused as to the role it should play inside the corporate framework. Further, because most business communication is now done via e-mails, texts, instant messaging, intranets, blogs, websites and other technology enabled media, minus body language, the potential for misinterpretation is growing. Rushed and stressed, people often do not take the time to consider the nuances of their writing. Conflicts explode over a tone of an e-mail, or that all-important cc: list. When someone writes a text in all capital letters, does it mean they are â€Å"shouting†? Are one- or two-word responses a sign that the person doesn’t want to engage? On the flip side, does a smiley face or an abbreviated acknowledgement of agreement really mean they are all set and aligned? Unfortunately conclusions are drawn on frighteningly little information. Getting Real In this wired world when we have only abridged words and faceless chats instead of voice, face and body expression how then do we communicate effectively and build more authentic relationships? Leaders must consider the impact on business relationships and the ability to effectively collaborate, build trust, and create employee engagement and loyalty. If you are drawing a conclusion about experiencing a conflict based on an electronic exchange, then pick up the phone or have a face-to-face conversation to clear things up. †¢Me first. Make an effort to check your own communications to ensure you aren’t sending an inaccurate  message. Take steps to put forth an accurate picture of reality. †¢Bridging the gap. As employees and employers, there are chances of dealing with different generations who have noticeably different communication preferences. Talk with colleagues about this aspect and ask for input on the best way to keep communication flowing through the team. †¢Stay connected. Don’t fall prey to the comfort of sitting behind closed doors and doing all your work from behind a computer screen or the hand-held device. No doubt it takes the pressure off many of the complexities of management, but this also disconnects us from face to face connections. Find a way to stay connected with colleagues; employee relationship is one of the determining factors for level of engagement and loyalty to the organization. †¢Beware of the disconnect. An eloquent and motivating online communication is easy to write. But if our words are not consistent with our actions and reality, this disconnect will harm our credibility and impede our ability to work effectively. †¢Two-way communication. Communication is essentially a two-way process. Just because you’ve fired off an e-mail or text, it doesn’t mean communication has taken place. We must pay attention to the feedback to see if our message is understood and accepted. Considering that this trend is here to stay, we need to create cultures where managers, employees and stakeholders renew their efforts to get at the real messages and issues. When colleagues spend personal time we can expect better working abilities. Correlations between face-to-face relationship-building and employee engagement and loyalty are a concept that has been proven again and again over the years. This has also been excellently explored in the concept â€Å"Management by Walking Around† in Tom Peters’ groundbreaking book In Search of Excellence. As global citizens of a technologically-enabled world we must find a way to incorporate all the amazing benefits which mediated communication has to offer while ensuring that we aren’t losing the human touch with the most significant personal and professional relationships.

Career Goals Over the past few decades, people have drastically changed the way they choose their career. Times have changed a great deal, and people no longer feel forced into a certain profession. People are now given endless choices and possibilities, and it is up to them to decide what they want to do the rest of their lives. When facing these important decisions, it is very easy to become confused. I once was very uncertain about any career goals I may have had, but now, I am more sure of the direction my life is going. When I was young, I never really knew what I wanted to become when I got older, but I always had very high aspirations for myself.
